Trevor Ariza, who signed a one-year, $15 million contract with the Phoenix Suns, broke down how the deal went through and what led to his decision.
Speaking with broadcaster Tom Leader, Ariza, 33, shared the story of how he was approached by the Suns management. Ariza's agent told him that a team wanted to speak to him. The veteran forward expected a phone call. But he got a Facetime call instead — the first in his career.

Many were shocked at Ariza's decision. He opted to leave the Houston Rockets, who were one game away from eliminating the powerhouse Golden State Warriors, for the Suns — a team that has been on the losing column for quite some time now.
Article Continues BelowAsked on his decision to move to Phoenix, Ariza said that while there were a lot of options for him, the Suns were the most different:
“It's time for a new start, new beginning. There was a lot of options for me but the one that was the most different, showed the more promise was this one. And I'm excited to be here. I'm happy to be here. It's closer to home for me.”
On luring 14-year veteran, Suns general manager Ryan McDonough said that Ariza's versatility, leadership, and shooting are the assets that attracted them, per NBA.com:
“We are excited to have Trevor join the Suns franchise. Trevor is a talented two-way player who will bring defensive versatility, shooting and leadership to our organization. He has played a big role on a lot of successful teams and we think he will have a tremendous impact on our club, both on and off of the court.”
