The Portland Trail Blazers are being urged by famed NBA analysts Shaquille O'Neal and Charles Barkley to make a bold move this season.
Things have not gone down well for the Blazers this season as the team has now lost six straight games in a row. On Tuesday night, Portland almost pulled off a comeback win against the second best team in the West, Phoenix Suns, but eventually fell short-handed in OT.
Weighing in on the Blazers' situation, NBA on TNT's Shaquille O'Neal and Charles Barkley both agreed that it is about time Portland “get rid” of its backcourt duo–Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum.
“They need to break the team up and start over,” Barkley reckoned via NBA on TNT. “They can get some good pieces. They can get some draft pieces. They should have broken Lillard and McCollum up three years ago. They lost in the first round three years in a row. You lose in the first round, you ain’t no good…It’s time to start over.”
“To Chuck’s point. If you make it to the Conference Finals, and then you lose the first round, you’re no good,” O'Neal added. “It’s time to break this team up…What they have been doing hasn’t worked. Dame is getting older, CJ is getting older. It’s time to either get rid of one of them or get rid of both of them.”
According to Lillard, who dropped 31 points in the Blazers' 111-107 loss to the Suns, the struggle is just in their heads.
“I just think we’re in one of those situations where it’s gonna be ugly sometimes, it’s gonna be a grind-it-out situation. But to me it’s a mental thing, just getting over the hump,” Lillard said post-game.
The Blazers will be hoping to finally end their winning drought when they face the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday.
