The New York Knicks and the Sacramento Kings televised an episode of the Great Tank Race 2018 on Sunday night and gave audiences not watching the Oscars a ride that went down the wire. It also saw Kings veteran Vince Carter reveal that he is the religious type.

In the final seconds of the game, the Knicks only had enough time to toss a heave to the other side of the court, hoping desperately that it will go in and force overtime. They were down by three with only 1.6 seconds to play and no timeout to advance the ball to midcourt.

As the ball flew through the air, growing ever closer the rim 80-plus feet away, Carter watched it intently. He was on the other side of the floor near the opposite basket, just waiting for the game to end, presumably.

When the ball was just a few feet from the rim, Carter crouched down and put his hands together, as if to show that he was hoping — praying? — that the shot did not go in. His prayers were answered, and the Kings escaped with a victory that is really a loss to the tanking Knicks.

The Kings had a big lead against the Knicks in this game, but they squandered it and almost let New York steal it. Carter was probably “praying” because he either wanted to win the game, or he wanted to go home already and not have to play the five-minute overtime period had it gone in.

The Oscars were on after all, and Kobe Bryant won for his short film, “Dear Basketball.” It stands to reason Carter would have rather been watching his fellow basketball brother win that award than have to try and lose a basketball game himself.
