One of the the NBA's “bad boys,” Matt Barnes, recently voiced his strong thoughts on the recent deaths of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile while also rebuking the murders of five police officers in Dallas.

Barnes said in a video uploaded by TMZ:

“It’s just disappointing that in 2016, we’ve taken steps back, instead of steps forward. I’m not saying all cops are bad, by any means, but a couple of bad cops can ruin it for everybody.”

The recently signed small forward of the Sacramento Kings was busted in 2012 for resisting arrest over a traffic warrant. He received a one game suspension from the league for that incident. He was suspended again last year for two games after a physical altercation with then-Knicks coach and former Lakers teammate Derek Fisher.

As a father of two boys and growing up and overcoming a lot of hardships himself, he gave some advice to the youth of America:

“Man, stay on the straight and narrow. Don’t take any chances, ‘cause cops aren’t playing. Every time they kill somebody, they’re getting off. You know what I mean? The odds aren’t in our favor, so just stay to yourself, try to stay out of trouble and stay home.

“I’ve faced a lot of racism. There were cops, I’ve been harassed by cops. Never on the racism side, but I’ve faced a lot of other things. Just different things. Hopefully the Dallas thing will be an isolated situation, because no one deserves to lose their lives. But it’s scary right now. For someone who has kids, it is scary, and I have kids.”

When asked if he has a solution to alleviate racial tensions between the black community and the police, Barnes had this to say:

“Man, I think good cops got to start calling out bad cops. You have to be held accountable. Everyone else is accountable for their actions and cops think when they get a badge, they’re not accountable, and hopefully good cops will start calling out bad cops.”

The “Black Lives Matter” cause has been something that a number of professional athletes have a been supporting and preaching these days, and Matt believes the recent incidents of violence and death has not helped it at all.

“Losing innocent lives never helps anything.”
