San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich has won five championships with the franchise. He has coached Hall of Fame players such as Tim Duncan, David Robinson, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili.

This season is the first year in a long, long time neither Duncan, Parker or Ginobili are on the roster. After the Spurs traded Kawhi Leonard to the Toronto Raptors last summer, many pundits thought San Antonio would struggle this season and miss the playoffs.

Those critics were wrong, as the Spurs enter Tuesday with a record of 43-31, which is good for seventh place in the Western Conference standings.

Gregg Popovich, aware the Spurs have been exceeding expectations, says this season has been very satisfying for him.

“This is one of the more enjoyable seasons,” Popovich said, via Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated. “It’s been fun to watch [the team’s] development. It’s satisfying.

“I’m really happy with the group. Some guys have overachieved. New guys are getting used to each other. I’m kind of a task master. I’ve got to understand, and I think I have, that patience was the order of the day for this group. Considering that we have played well, recent wins against good teams, that’s a good sign that they are figuring it out.”

The Spurs are led by DeMar DeRozan and LaMarcus Aldridge, two players who aren't flashy or superstars but get the job done night in and night out.

Those are the type of players Popovich loves to coach.
