Like many other franchises around the NBA landscape have chosen to do in light of the coronavirus pandemic, the San Antonio Spurs are taking steps to ensure that their part-time employees will be paid through the end of the season:

“As San Antonio feels the ripple effects of the difficult decisions we have all had to make because of this global pandemic, we know that few will feel this more than the members of our community who rely on hourly and part-time employment to take care of their families,” said Spurs Sports & Entertainment chairman Peter J. Holt in an official statement that was released on Monday afternoon.

Last week, the NBA decided to suspend the 2019-20 regular season due to ongoing concerns surrounding the coronavirus pandemic. Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert became the first confirmed case on March 11. His teammate, Donovan Mitchell, was diagnosed shortly after.

At this point, it's not clear if (or when) the regular season might be able to resume. Some, including Mavs owner Mark Cuban, have said this campaign could run all the way into July or even August. Other options include a jump into the postseason, which would leave some teams that are currently vying for seeding out of the hunt, or a full-on cancellation.

The NBA's suspension of the regular season will have unforeseen financial effects on some of the lesser-known faces at its arenas — the ushers, concession workers and bartenders, for instance. Though there are no games being played, it's nice to see the Spurs and other teams around the league doing what they can to take care of their employees.
