The San Antonio Spurs have been rather strict in trade conversations with other teams for their estranged star Kawhi Leonard, keeping talks rather short due to the limited access they've provided over time.

According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski and Ramona Shelburne, the Spurs have yet to allow teams to speak directly to Leonard or his representatives without an agreement at hand, despite the strong hesitation teams have displayed regarding his health and his willingness to sign long-term with their respective franchise.

“The Spurs haven't allowed prospective trade partners to talk directly with Leonard, nor his representation — and it's unlikely that permission will be granted without an agreement in principle on a deal to acquire Leonard — if even then. In most NBA deals, no medical information is exchanged until an agreement on trade parameters is reached.”

Teams have only offered future draft picks and slim assets for Leonard, refusing to dangle their best assets for one of the league's best players.

The amount of unknown surrounding Leonard has made it impossible for teams to gamble in signing their future away to the Spurs for a potential one-year rental who could potentially be not fully healthy to start the season or have further injury complications down the road.

While this is all common policy, the situation screams for some sort of change in order to get a trade done, given Leonard's often-quiet demeanor and poor accessibility during the offseason.
