This summer, impending free agent DeMar DeRozan is looking to cash in. The San Antonio Spurs — who recently bought out LaMarcus Aldridge — are expected to fully turn the page this offseason and allow $78 million to come off their books, thereby freeing up enough cap space to add a max contract.

That includes 31-year old DeRozan, who is quietly having another stellar season for the 24-24 Spurs, who currently sit no. 9 in the Western Conference. In his third year in San Antonio and 12th overall, the four-time All-Star is averaging 21 points (49.3% FG), seven assists (career-high), and 4.4 rebounds per game in 41 games.

As The Athletic pointed out, all six players in the 21/7/4 club in 2020-21 are either on max deals or assured to get one (Luka Doncic).

Well, except DeRozan, who's in the final season of a five-year, $139 million contract — slightly below the max.

After sacrificing dollars and scoring opportunities over the past few years, DeRozan is ready to score big in unrestricted free agency, according to Sam Amick and John Hollinger:

A source with knowledge of DeRozan’s outlook said he’ll be taking a “wide open” approach to free agency in terms of possible landing spots. But after these past three seasons in San Antonio, where he was asked to sacrifice on the scoring front and evolve as a playmaker in the process, the master of the midrange has put himself in prime position to take advantage of this well-earned reputation as a more versatile offensive threat.

Assuming Kawhi Leonard re-ups with the Los Angeles Clippers, DeRozan is expected to be the most coveted wing on the market.
