The Toronto Raptors recently pulled off a trade that sent Demarre Carroll to the Brooklyn Nets, to the surprise of a lot of their fans. What left them in further disbelief was only getting Justin Hamilton in exchange for their starting small forward. However, the move was more of a financially-motivated decision for Toronto.
In order to maintain a manageable cap, the team is expected to waive Hamilton and extend his salary’s hit on their cap for three years. He will then become an unrestricted free agent once he clears waivers, and will be available to sign with any team that will show interest in him.
The Raptors plan to waive and stretch C Justin Hamilton after acquiring him from Nets, league sources say.

The 27-year-old LSU product has been a journeyman throughout his five-year professional career. He has played for four different franchises before the trade to the Raptors, and spent last season with the Nets, appearing in 64 matches for them. He has career averages of 4.5 points and 2.4 rebounds in 13.8 minutes per game.
The Raptors will have an open roster spot available once they complete Hamilton’s paperwork. They may look to add a wing player or a center to give them more depth in their rotation, as they plan to have an even deeper run in the playoffs next season, and compete against the title favorites in the Eastern Conference.
