Shortly before making their trade with the San Antonio Spurs for Kawhi Leonard, the Toronto Raptors teamed up with McDonald's for an in-game promotion. If Toronto were to make 12 three-pointers in any game, fans in Ontario would receive a free order of french fries from the popular fast food restaurant.
McDonald's Sr. Marketing Manager Rick Coolen was a bit apprehensive at first, as he admittedly wasn't sure who this Kawhi Leonard guy was.
Coolen was worried about the trade, but after a discussion with his contact Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, he was assured that Leonard would take the Raptors to new heights.
Now, roughly a year later, Leonard has led the Raptors to their first NBA Finals appearance in franchise history. As a result, McDonald's has dished out more than two million medium-sized orders of fries. According to a report from financialpost.com, that's more than three times the 700,000 orders that the company projected to give away at its Ontario-area locations.
Last season, the Raptors averaged 11.8 threes per game, hitting 12 or more threes in 43 of their 82 regular season games (five times in the playoffs) — and that was without the services of Leonard or Danny Green, who was also acquired in the trade. This season, Toronto made 12 or threes in 44 regular season outings (10 such games in the playoffs so far).

Toronto knocked down 13 triples in Game 1 of the NBA Finals. As a result, McDonald's gave away a record 80,000 orders of free fries.
The Raptors will be back in action on Friday night, when they'll face the Golden State Warriors for Game 4. Tip-off inside Oracle Arena is set for 9:00 p.m. ET, with ABC having live broadcast coverage.
