It goes without saying that there are a number of great matchups in the Western Conference Playoffs this year. Among them is the showdown between the upstart Utah Jazz and star-studded Oklahoma City Thunder.

The first game of the series certainly did not disappoint as it featured monster performances on both teams. To no surprise, Jazz guard Donovan Mitchell made his mark by joining elite company.

According to ESPN Stats & Info, Mitchell became the first player since Cleveland Cavaliers forward LeBron James to register at least 25 points and 10 rebounds in their playoff debut:

Needless to say, it was quite the performance from the rookie. He finished with 27 points on an efficient 11-of-22 shooting from the field and 3-of-7 of the 3-point line. He also managed to tally 10 rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Unfortunately, the Jazz fell short in the 116-108 loss thanks to a stellar 36-point performance from Paul George.

As great as Mitchell's performance was, it pales in comparison to the outing James had in 2006. “The King” recorded 32 points, 11 rebounds, and 11 assists in the Cavs' win over the Washington Wizards. He became the first player since Los Angeles Lakers legend Magic Johnson to register a triple-double in a playoff debut.

Regardless, it is still indicative of the type of player Mitchell has been in his rookie season. Utah had a bit of a scare during the loss when their young star came up hobbling after his foot was stepped on by Thunder forward Corey Brewer. However, he was adamant about making his return and ultimately finished the game on a strong note which bodes well for his health moving forward.
