Washington Wizards guard Bradley Beal reacted to Donald Trump's speech on Monday in which the President announced that he will mobilize military personnel to stop those who continue to protest unjust police treatment of black people.
Rallies expressing outrage over the killing of George Floyd continued into their seventh day.
Speaking Monday afternoon at the White House Rose Garden, Trump called himself the “law and order” president and blamed “domestic terrorism” for the turbulence.
“As we speak, I am dispatching thousands and thousands of heavily armed soldiers, military personnel, and law enforcement officers to stop the rioting, looting, vandalism, assaults, and the wanton destruction of property,” Trump said, per ABC News. “We will end it now.”
Trump also called on governors to use the National Guard to “dominate the streets” and threatened to deploy active duty military if they did not oblige to his satisfaction. He said he could invoke the 1807 Insurrection Act, permitting a president to deploy military units within United States borders to deal with civil affairs.
In response, the Wizards star tweeted, “Deploy US military on US citizens? Really.” Moreover, Bradley Beal and the rest of his teammates posted a defiant statement on Instagram:
“WE WILL NO LONGER TOLERATE THE ASSASSINATION OF PEOPLE OF COLOR IN THIS COUNTRY. WE WILL NO LONGER ACCEPT THE ABUSE OF POWER FROM LAW ENFORCEMENT. WE WILL NO LONGER ACCEPT INEFFECTIVE GOVERNMENT LEADERS WHO ARE TONE-DEAF, LACK COMPASSION OR RESPECT FOR COMMUNITIES OF COLOR. WE WILL NOT LONGER SHUT UP AND DRIBBLE.”
Aside from the Wizards and Beal, more and more players are standing up and speaking out to fight racism and racial injustice in the nation. Stars like LeBron James, Trae Young and Tobias Harris, as well as coaches like Lloyd Pierce, Steve Kerr and Gregg Popovich have all took action to address the issue.
