Heading into the 2021 college football season, Michigan football head coach Jim Harbaugh was on thin ice. He was entering his 7th season as the coach of the Wolverines, and while Michigan had improved greatly compared to how they were before the Harbaugh era, he had no wins against Ohio State, no Big Ten titles and no College Football Playoff appearances. After a 2-4 COVID season, that was the year that most Wolverines fans had lost hope. However, that was also the year that Harbaugh and Michigan got the job done.
The 2021 season was huge for the Michigan football program, but many people thought that it was a fluke and that there was no way the Wolverines would beat Ohio State on the road the next season. A big reason for those thoughts was because Michigan lost a ton of talent to the NFL after the 2021 season. However, the Wolverines were able to reload because of the transfer portal, and they repeated their 2021 success again in 2o22.
Now, the transfer portal is open yet again, and it is one of the most important parts of the college football world today. The portal opened just a few days ago, but there are already over 1,200 players that have entered their name. It's going to be another busy offseason in college football.
Michigan football has benefited greatly from the portal the past two years, and they are going to need to hit it big again this year. The Wolverines are currently ranked #1 in the country and they are back in the College Football Playoff for the third straight season. A big reason why Michigan is so good this season is because they are loaded with NFL talent. This team could send a record number of players to the NFL after this season. The Wolverines will once again need to reload in the offseason, and they will do it with the transfer portal. Here are some players that Michigan should target.
QB Dante Moore, UCLA
JJ McCarthy has been a terrific quarterback for Michigan football, and he will likely play his final games for the Wolverines in January. Michigan has some options behind him, but none of them seem ready to be a Big Ten starter quite yet. True freshman Jadyn Davis will be coming in next year as well, but it's also unlikely that he will be ready. UCLA transfer Dante Moore, however, is a great option, and the Wolverines are already contacting him. Moore was heavily recruited by Michigan out of high school as he is from Detroit, MI, and it would be surprising if he doesn't end up back in the Wolverine state.
IOL Ethan Miner, North Texas
The past two seasons, Michigan has landed one of the best centers in the transfer portal, and it has worked out extremely well for them. First, it was Olu Oluwatimi, and he ended up winning the Rimington Award with the Wolverines, which goes to the nation's best center. This year, Michigan's starting center is Drake Nugent, who transferred from Stanford. He is also one of the top centers in college football, and he will be moving on to the NFL after this season. The Wolverines could hit the portal again for a center, and Ethan Miner from North Texas would be a great option.
RB Treshaun Ward, Kansas State
Everybody knows that Michigan loves to rely on their run game, and they could be losing their top two backs to the NFL after this season. Blake Corum has had a record setting year this season, and the versatile Donovan Edwards is expected to go to the league as well. Don't be shocked if the Wolverines look to the portal for a running back, and Treshaun Ward could be a good fit.
