Heartbreaking news for Heartbreak High
Netflix Director of Content ANZ Que Minh Luu said, “She never got the letter – but now we get to see what happens next! Renewing Heartbreak High for its final season is a major point of pride for us at Netflix.”
“It has been a joy to work with the utterly cooked creative minds behind our favourite Aussie YA show and to bring our stories, our culture and our in-jokes to all the fans here at home and throughout the world. See you at muck up day,” she continued.
Fremantle Head of Scripted Carly Heaton stated, “We are beyond excited to all come together again as we love existing in the craziness of Hartley High. We aimed to create a show where Aussie young people are seen and heard and we are completely overwhelmed by the worldwide reaction to the stories of these characters. All of us who work on the series are grateful to have the opportunity to see what kind of mess evolves in season three.”
The Netflix series is a soft reboot of the Australian show which started in 1994. It show ran for seven series with 210 episodes until 1999. It originated from Richard Barrett's 1987 stage play, The Heartbreak Kid.
The Netflix iteration follows the story of Hartley High students. A map detailing the students' sexual exploits is discovered as a graffiti on the school's wall. The students whose names appear on the map are then forced to attend the Sexual Literacy Tutorial or SLT. However, the students pronounce the new sex education course as “sluts.”
When Amerie Wadia (Ayesha Madon) takes the fall for the map for its co-author Harper McLean (Asher Yasbincek), she becomes a social outcast. Harper, on the other hand, stopped speaking to Amerie after the tragedy at a music festival they both attended.
The show currently has a 75% Tomatometer and an impressive 90% audience rating. It premiered on Netflix in September 2022.
