Brooklyn Nets star Kyrie Irving wasn't at Nets Media Day on Monday because of health and safety protocols, but he did speak to the media on a video call. Irving, obviously, was asked about his COVID-19 vaccination status amid the reports of him being unvaccinated and an explosive Rolling Stone report on unvaxxed players.
The Nets point guard essentially gave the same answer each time he was asked a different version of the question, saying he wants his privacy respected and that everything will get worked out:
Irving said if anyone asks further that the answer will be the same and requests that the media respects his privacy.
Irving did note that "I'll handle it the right way with my team and we'll go forward with a plan."

Irving was asked about his availability to play in Nets home games: "Again, please respect my privacy. Everything will be released in due time when all of this is cleared up."

Irving also claimed he doesn't want to be a distraction:
Asked if he's excited to play in front of the Brooklyn fans, Kyrie Irving says "I'm excited…The last thing I wanted to create was this hoopla and distractions. I'm continuously growing and learning from others…It won't be easy, but I feel like we have a recipe for success."

As it stands, Irving can't play in Nets home games because of New York's COVID-19 rules. Irving suggests this situation is going to get “cleared up” somehow, but he doesn't say how that will happen. Maybe he'll get vaccinated at some point if there are no other options, but as of right now it seems like he might be trying to get an exemption. Golden State Warriors forward Andrew Wiggins recently failed in his bid to get a religious exemption.
For what it's worth, Kevin Durant isn't currently worried about Irving's status, while James Harden deflected when he was asked. The Nets are trying to keep cool vibes right now, but we'll see what happens if the regular season gets here and there's no resolution.
