All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving is reportedly leaning toward signing a four-year, $141 million deal with the Brooklyn Nets once free agency starts on June 30, according to Brian Lewis of The New York Post.
Irving grew up in New Jersey and was a Nets fan.
Multiple sources throughout the NBA believe Irving is leaning toward signing a four-year, $141 million deal with Brooklyn once free agency starts Sunday. And those sources universally agree he’s leaving Boston, — with those bridges not just burned, but bombed into rubble.
Once Irving signs with the Nets, Brooklyn will turn its attention to Kevin Durant. The Nets are widely expected to offer Durant a max deal despite the Achilles tendon injury KD suffered in Game 5 of the NBA Finals.
This past season with the Boston Celtics, Irving averaged 23.8 points, 5.0 rebounds and 6.9 assists while shooting 48.7 percent from the field, 40.1 percent from beyond the arc and 87.3 percent from the free-throw line. The Nets' core of Spencer Dinwiddie, Jarrett Allen, Joe Harris and Caris LeVert is strong. Adding Irving to that mix makes the Nets a serious contender to win the Eastern Conference in 2019-20.
All season long, everyone thought Irving was headed to the New York Knicks. However, the Nets made the postseason this past year and have a brighter future than the Knicks. Irving is believed to be compelled by what he sees as a better existing situation in Brooklyn.
Assuming Irving signs with Brooklyn, all signs point toward D'Angelo Russell playing on another team next season.
