EA, in partnership with Middle-Earth Enterprises, will be bringing to you a Triple A Lord of the Rings Mobile Game.

No Tolkien fan would outright say no to a new Lord of the Rings video game. However, we're not just sure if this extends to mobile games based on J.R.R. Tolkien's beloved world.

EA's Capital Games is currently working on a collectible RPG game that features turn-based combat and a diverse cast of characters and locations from Middle-Earth. The game is going to be free-to-play, and given EA's propensity for microtransactions, expect the game's monetization to suck the fun out of it. Be surprised if it doesn't.

“We are happy to be collaborating with EA again, this time to offer Middle-earth as portrayed in J.R.R. Tolkien's literary works to its fans,” says Middle-Earth Enterprises Chief Brand Officer and Chief Licensing Officer Fredrica Drotos.

“We are very excited to join with The Saul Zaentz Company and Middle-earth Enterprises on the next generation of mobile role-playing games,” says EA's Vice-President of Mobile RPG Malachi Boyle. “The team is made up of fans of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, and each day they bring their incredible enthusiasm and talents together to provide players with a real experience. Players will be immersed in the fantasy of Middle-earth, where they will go head-to-head with their favorite characters, thanks to a combination of high-fidelity graphics, cinematic animations, and stylish art.”

This isn't the first time EA has worked with Middle-Earth Enterprises. However, the more recent Lord of the Rings titles have been through Monolith Production, resulting in the critically acclaimed Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor and Middle-Earth: Shadow of War. If you know how they fumbled the monetization of that game, too, then you're a true Tolkien fan indeed. Sad to say, it seems like Lord of the Rings games just can't take a break from greedy monetization schemes. Hopefully this new mobile game's monetization won't be too intrusive.
