Since suffering a concussion last season, veteran tight end Coby Fleener has had a long road back to a full recovery from the injury in the months that have followed.

According to Don Banks of the Athletic, Fleener has revealed that he is still dealing with symptoms of the ailment that have put his career in jeopardy.

“It’s still there, unfortunately,’’ Fleener said by phone late Wednesday night. “I’m just hoping it heals and gets better from time, I guess. I’d still like to play, but I have to get healthy first before I can even make that decision really. That’s the frustrating aspect of it. The doctors aren’t able to say, ‘Oh, in four to six weeks, he’ll be right as rain.’ That’s just not the reality with concussions. It’s a frustration for every athlete and every doctor who treats them and every coach who has to coach them.’’

The former New Orleans Saints tight end had suffered the injury in Week 12 of the 2017 campaign after a helmet-to-helmet hit by Los Angeles Rams cornerback Blake Countess. This marked the fifth known concussion that he has had in his NFL career that has likely made it more difficult for him to recover. It had led to the Saints deciding to part ways with him two years into his five-year, $36 million deal that he had inked in free agency back in 2016.

These type of injuries don't necessarily have a timetable for when the symptoms will completely pass, which has made this much more troubling situation for the 29-year-old. He clearly still has the desire to continue his playing career, but that is seemingly out of his hands.

It is an ongoing process that has tested Fleener's will and drive to play in the NFL, but until his symptoms completely dissipate he will have to continue wait to get his next shot.
