It's no secret that many NFL players don't like President Donald Trump. While some players may not be outspoken in terms of their disdain of Trump, free agent defensive end Michael Bennett is not afraid to let his opinion be known.
In a recent interview with Robert Silverman of The Daily Beast, Bennett spoke on what he believes is the hypocrisy of NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and his thoughts on the president. Said Bennett,
“[Goodell] saying that Black Lives Matter is almost like a slap in the face … Black talent has been exploited at a high level in the NFL. He knows Black Lives Matter, because without black players the NFL wouldn’t be as lucrative as it is.”
Bennett isn't the only one to call out the video that Goodell posted last week following protests popping up around the country in the wake of the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis, as many other critics called out the commissioner's message for being hypocritical and insincere.
Bennett also called out the league's numerous public relations efforts in recent weeks, stating the hypocrisy with Trump's ties to the NFL. For Bennett, the goal is to know the truth:
“Is the intent of the NFL to really make a positive impact, or is it not to be seen as if they don’t respect the players? … If you’re supporting him [Trump], then your letter is really null and void.”
The veteran defensive end and three-time Pro Bowler spent the 2019 season with the Dallas Cowboys and New England Patriots. In 15 games, Bennett made one start and recorded 32 tackles, 14 tackles for a loss and 6.5 sacks.
