New England Patriots cornerback Jason McCourty questions whether the NFL and NFLPA actually care about player safety or not as the COVID-19 pandemic continues.

McCourty cited the Patriots' game against the Kansas City Chiefs as just one example of how the NFL and NFLPA may not be taking COVID-19 seriously since the contest was still played despite New England star quarterback Cam Newton testing positive for COVID-19 just three days prior to the game.

“I think outside of here, the people that don't have to walk in our building — whether it is the league office, whether it is the NFLPA — they don't care,” McCourty said, via Mike Reiss of ESPN.

“For them, it is not about our best interest, or our health and safety, it is about, ‘What can we make protocol-wise that sounds good, looks good, and how can we go out there and play games?' I think what I kind of learned personally throughout this situation is it is going to be up to us as individuals in this building to just really take care of one another.”

Fellow Patriots cornerback Stephon Gilmore tested positive for COVID-19 after being in close contact with Newton. Overall, New England has had three players hit the COVID-19/reserve list.

The Patriots, who are 2-2 on the season, reopened their practice facility on Saturday and held their first practice of the week. New England's Week 5 game against the Denver Broncos has been moved to Monday Night football due to COVID-19 concerns.

In hindsight, the Patriots-Chiefs game probably shouldn't have been played, but the NFL still went forward with it, something McCourty remains perplexed about.
