The league recently received a grim update from Dr. Anthony Fauci regarding the potential fate of the 2020 NFL season. However, it seems President Donald Trump is more concerned about what will take place in the event that football does eventually come to fruition.

To no surprise, Trump recently took to Twitter to downplay the concerns of the nation's top infectious disease expert while threatening that any player protests during the national anthem would lose him as a viewer:

Tony Fauci has nothing to do with NFL Football. They are planning a very safe and controlled opening. However, if they don’t stand for our National Anthem and our Great American Flag, I won’t be watching!!!

Although Trump's comments have started off in full-fledged support for the NFL, he quickly contradicted this notion by shooting down the idea of any protests. Of course, this hardly comes as any surprise considering all the criticism he has given the league for switching its stance this offseason.

It is safe to say that Trump's empty threats will do little to deter the NFL from staying on the path it has laid out for itself. After all, it has already been deemed a foregone conclusion that player protests have become an inevitability in the wake of all the efforts being made to combat racial injustice.

Although Trump pledged to stop watching football at the drop of a hat if his request is not met, he has still made sure to keep up with all the headlines surrounding the NFL. New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees and commissioner Roger Goodell are among those that he has openly criticized on social media for their efforts to get educated on the real issues at hand.
