Defensive end Cassius Marsh only played six games for the San Francisco 49ers in the 2017 NFL season. However, that was all general manager John Lynch needed to make sure he sticks around.

Marsh has been somewhat of a journeyman early in his career. Fortunately, he will have some stability for the near future after agreeing to a two-year extension with the Niners. Lynch released a statement on behalf of the team regarding the signing via Darin Gantt of Pro Football Talk:

“Since joining the team late last season, Cassius has impressed us with his unique skill set and the tremendous energy and passion he brings to all phases of the game,” 49ers General Manager John Lynch said in a statement. “Cassius is a great example of our desire to reward our own players with contract extensions as we continue to build out our roster. We’re excited to have him as a 49er moving forward.”

Marsh entered the league as a fourth-round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft with the Seattle Seahawks. He spent his first three seasons with the Seahawks before being traded to the New England Patriots prior to this year. Marsh was released a couple months later amidst New England's disastrous start on defense and was subsequently picked up on waivers by the Niners a day later.

The former UCLA product registered two sacks, 11 tackles, and two forced fumbles in the team's last six games. While his production may have been somewhat modest, Marsh was able to show plenty of promise as an edge rusher. Needless to say, the Niners will need all the help they can get putting pressure on quarterbacks next year after their lackluster pass rush this season.
