Anyone who made a bet that Dez Bryant will get an NFL job before the 2018 season starts had to cough up money on Thursday when the Atlanta Falcons and the Philadelphia Eagles kicked the new NFL calendar.
M0reover, anyone who laid money on the proposition that the Arizona Cardinals will be Bryant’s next team might want to set aside a budget after hearing what Arizona general manager Steve Keim had to say about the player’s possibility of joining the Cards.
In a recent appearance on the “Doug and Wolf” show on 98.7, Arizona Sports Station, Keim was asked about his team’s interest in Bryant and while he didn’t directly say that the wideout has no chance in Arizona, he did sound as though the odds are long for that to happen (h/t Darren Urban of Azcardinals.com).
“I always try and remain aggressive when it comes to player acquisition, regardless of whether it is a vet or someone we can kick the tires on as a young player,” Keim said. “But this isn't fantasy football. There is a business side to this as well. To be honest, we talk about all these players. … but at the same time, there is a business side that can create obstacles.”
According to Overthecap.com, the Cardinals only have $7.7 million left on their salary cap space, meaning they don’t have that much spending power to give in to Bryant’s salary demand. The 29-year-old wideout previously rejected a one-year deal proposal from the Cleveland Browns worth $5 million. Prior to that, he turned down $7 million per year offer from the Baltimore Ravens.
Bryant is still capable of having a productive year, but it seems not a lot of teams would rather save salary cap space than sign him to his asking price.
