The Arizona Cardinals are set to bring in veteran safety Mike Mitchell for a visit and a physical on Wednesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Mitchell, 31, had spent the last four seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers before being released this offseason for cap purposes.
Mitchell played 61 out of a possible 64 games over four years for the Steelers, making 286 tackles with four interceptions and four forced fumbles. The only three games he missed all came last season. He recorded just 53 tackles and two passes defended with no interceptions in 2017.
Mitchell had his best statistical season in 2013 with the Carolina Panthers. He had four interceptions, four sacks, two forced fumbles, and 72 tackles in 15 games that season. He could potentially be reunited with his defensive backs coach that season with the Panthers: new Cardinals head coach Steve Wilks.
The 31-year-old Mitchell, who is known for his big hits, could be a decent addition to a Cardinals team in need of reinforcements at safety following their release of Tyrann Mathieu this offseason. Their likely starting safeties heading into the season are veteran Antoine Bethea and 2017 second-round pick Budda Baker.
But they don't have any sort of proven depth behind them. They’ve brought in three undrafted free agents in AJ Howard, Jonathan Owens, and Ezekiel Turner, along with Rudy Ford and Travell Dixon.
