Cleveland Browns tight end David Njoku didn’t exactly light it up in his rookie season last year. He finished with just 32 catches for 386 yards and four touchdowns for the 0-16 Browns.
Browns head coach Hue Jackson is still a big believer in Njoku’s talent, though, and he expects the tight end to take a big step up in his second season in the league.
“I expect to see a huge jump,” Jackson said per Patrick Maks of the Browns' official website. “He’s very athletic. He can catch and run. He’s going to be one of our playmakers.”
Jackson believes Njoku may have worn down at the tail end of his rookie year because of the tough task of blocking outside linebackers and defensive ends on a consistent basis. But with a year of experience now under his belt, Jackson clearly believes Njoku will be able to cope with that aspect of the game better in Year 2.
Unlike last season, the Browns won’t be lacking in playmakers they can turn to on offense. They’ve added Jarvis Landry and rookie Antonio Callaway this offseason to a receiving corps which Josh Gordon believes is the best in the league. They also have a formidable-looking three-headed attack at running back with Carlos Hyde, Nick Chubb, and Duke Johnson.
Nevertheless, Njoku is expected to be the Browns’ main man at the tight end position so he should have every opportunity to live up to Jackson’s lofty expectations. And if he does show marked improvement, the Browns’ offense will only benefit from yet another potential weapon in the passing game.
