Fresh off their exciting season that ultimately ended far too soon, the Buffalo Bills tackled the 2022 NFL Draft in a way that helped surround Josh Allen with help, while also helping give their defense some help. But their class of undrafted free agents can have an impact as well as they try and get over the hump and back to the Super Bowl.

For Buffalo’s offense, they have a lot of solid options across the board, headlined by Allen and Stefon Diggs, but you can never have too much depth in the NFL, which is why they approached the draft as they did. With the Bills 2022 roster taking shape, there is one interesting option added as an undrafted free agent (UDFA) that could very well make the final roster.

Bills Undrafted Free Agent To Make 2022 NFL Roster

Jalen Wydermyer
TE – Texas A&M

A player built on high expectations that never really amounted to anything during his college days, Texas A&M’s Jalen Wydermyer fell from the graces after a strong freshman year (32/447/6) but was unable to replicate those numbers after that.

Wydermyer enters a bit of a packed TE room, as Dawson Knox leads offseason signee OJ Howard and incumbent Tommy Sweeney. As the Bills are likely to only take three tight ends onto their final roster, it is likely that, barring any injuries, this battle will come down to Sweeney versus Wydermyer, which looks like a bit of an uphill battle currently for the rookie.

His receiving metrics are what puts him on the NFL radar, as he is below average in regard to run blocking, an element that will hurt him in the league, especially in an offensive style like the one that the Bills employ that is so run-centric.

For Wydermyer to carve out a role for him will require him to pick up blocking skills, doing so at a quick pace that can help him stand out in this group. While the Bills did not use a draft pick on a TE, showing they are quite comfortable with their current group of TEs, their signing of Wydermyer demonstrates they are willing and open to looking for an infusion of talent at the bottom of that depth chart.

Knox is the established option for this team at that position, and he has taken on an even bigger role in the receiving aspect, becoming one of Allen’s most trusted targets in the offense. With Howard now in the mix, the Bills can look to roll out sturdier two-TE sets under new offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey, who was promoted after Brian Daboll was hired away to become the new head coach for the New York Giants.

Wydermyer may have a tough battle ahead of himself during camp, but if he is a willing learner and picks up things quickly, then he can translate some of his freshman-year success into his first year with the Bills, hopefully sticking with the team moving forward.
