The Buffalo Bills have hired Alabama offensive coordinator Brian Daboll to be their offensive coordinator, per ESPN’s Mike Rodak.
Daboll spent last season at Alabama, where he led the Crimson Tide's offense to a national championship. Daboll will replace Rick Dennison, who was fired as Bills offensive coordinator last week after just one season.
“We are excited to hire Brian as our offensive coordinator and welcome him back to Western New York,” Bills head coach Sean McDermott said in a statement. “I know how much this area means to him. He is a good coach and a good teacher and has been part of winning programs in the NFL and in college.”
Daboll, who is a Buffalo native, has previously been an NFL offensive coordinator in three previous stops with the Cleveland Browns (2009-10), Miami Dolphins (2011) and Kansas City Chiefs (2012). He also spent 11 seasons as a New England Patriots assistant in two separate stints with the team.
Daboll will inherit a Bills offense which finished 29th in total offense with 302.6 yards per game and were tied for 24th in scoring offense with 17.6 points per game in 2017. He will particularly focus on improving a passing attack which finished ahead of only the Chicago Bears in terms of passing yards per game.
However, Daboll could have his work cut out for him if quarterback Tyrod Taylor leaves as expected. If the Bills don't draft or sign a quarterback, Nate Peterman could be set to be the team's starter next season. Peterman infamously had five interceptions against the Los Angeles Chargers in his lone start as a rookie this season.
