The Buffalo Bills signed kicker Stephen Hauschka back in 2017. Since then, he's 51-for-61 on field goal attempts and 11-for-16 on kicks over 50 yards. They've decided that's more than enough to want to keep going with the pairing.
Despite having 2019 still under contract, the Bills have wasted no time and added more years onto the deal. According to Josh Alper of ProFootballTalk.com, Stephen Hauschka and the Buffalo Bills have agreed to a two-year contract extension.
The extension keeps Hauschka with Buffalo through the 2021 season. He'll be 36 by the time that contract is up, meaning he could have a lot more time left in him. This gives him a chance to sign another solid contract before he hangs up the cleats – either in Buffalo or somewhere else.
This move makes a lot of sense for the Bills. They're considered a team that could be on the rise – and quickly. Although there are a lot of holes, they did manage to go 6-10 last season and have a young roster highlighted by their second-year quarterback in Josh Allen.
Nothing helps a young quarterback and a team more than a solid kicker. When you can get stable production out of your kick it makes a world of a difference.
Kickers can take a lot of pressure of a quarterback. If you have a reliable kicker, you shorten the field for your quarterback. Yes, the ultimate goal is always to get into the end zone, but having a kicker that can get you steady production from 40+ or even 50+ changes the game.
The Buffalo Bills are looking to continue their upward trend in the upcoming years. That includes Josh Allen taking the next step forward.
It sounds weird, but signing kicker Stephen Hauschka to an extension is the right next step to take.
