The Buffalo Bills chose to add the assistant head coach title to Leslie Frazier's job description, but he revealed that he was already doing more than just being the defensive coordinator. After officially receiving the promotion, Frazier explained his role on the Bills coaching staff.
“My role has always gone beyond coordinating defense, obviously that's primary for sure to make sure our defense is right,” Frazier said. “We've always talked about where our offense is, where special teams is, what's going on organizationally.”
Back in 2017, when Sean McDermott became the head coach in Buffalo, he chose to hire Frazier as his defensive coordinator. Prior to the Bills, McDermott and Frazier had previously worked together with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Also, Frazier has experience as a head coach in the NFL and wants McDermott to avoid making the mistakes he did. Therefore, he and McDermott have a close relationship and tend to speak about the specifics of the entire gameplan; not just the defense.
“That's the beauty of our relationship,” Frazier said. “It goes back to 1999 when we both joined the staff of Andy Reid in Philadelphia. That trust that is necessary to really have those hard conversations is there based on our history together, and that helps a lot. It is fortunate to have a head coach who wants to do what's best for the Bills, it's not about who gets the credit.”
Frazier has been a well-respected coach in the NFL for quite some time. Due to his trusted relationship with McDermott, he seems to have a prominent role in the direction of the Bills organization.
