In search of a new punter ahead of their divisional round matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs, the Buffalo Bills turned to a familiar face. The Bills signed Matt Haack on Wednesday, per Adam Schefter. Haack was part of the 2021 Bills.

Bills punter Sam Martin was injured in Buffalo's wild card victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday. Martin is nursing a hamstring injury but it is not yet known if he will be available for Sunday's game.

A seven-year NFL veteran, Haack got his start with the Miami Dolphins in 2017. He punted for the Dolphins for four seasons, never missing a game. He launched multiple punts of more than 80 yards in his first two seasons.

After Miami, Haack signed a three-year deal with Buffalo but only played one season with the Bills. He was released during the preseason in 2022 in favor of rookie Matt Araiza, who himself was cut days later.

It didn’t take long for Haack to find a new home after Buffalo as he signed with the Indianapolis Colts two days after being released. He played all 17 games for them in 2022. He appeared in one game this season, launching three punts for the Cleveland Browns in Week 17.

Buffalo Bills stars James Cook, Stefon Diggs, and Josh Allen in front of Highmark Stadium.

The Bills will know they need to have a consistent game on offense if they want to beat the Chiefs. It will be intriguing to see how Martin's injury will impact Buffalo's game plan, if at all.

The Bills likely signed Haack knowing they feel comfortable enough with him kicking three or four times if needed. The likelihood of Buffalo being more aggressive might be pretty high considering the circumstances.

In their wild card game, the Bills only punted three times in 11 drives. They'd be wise to keep that number low regardless if Martin or Haack is playing. If the Chiefs bring their A-game, the Bills might have no choice but to be aggressive.

There may be no hotter team left in the NFL playoffs than the Buffalo Bills, but could an injury to their punter spell some trouble in the divisional round?
