Teams around the NFL will be starting mandatory minicamps in the coming days. The Carolina Panthers will be delighted to see Cam Newton be able to participate in their minicamp—sort of.

According to Max Henson, a writer for the Panthers official site, Newton will throw at Carolina's minicamp that begins on Tuesday. This comes a few months after the Panthers quarterback underwent surgery to repair an injury he suffered to his throwing shoulder.

Last season, Newton got off to a fast start, leading the Panthers to a 6-2 record to begin the campaign. Then, after a Week 10 bout against the Pittsburgh Steelers, things went awry.

Newton would suffer a shoulder injury in that game after taking a hard hit from T.J. Watt. Carolina would lose the game by a score of 52-21. Despite Newton showing his toughness, the flashy quarterback was never the same after that hit.

Newton would play through the injury as long as he could until the Panthers shut him down later in the season. Carolina would end the season with a 7-9 record after starting the year at 6-2. The organization will be cautious this offseason with Newton, knowing how vital he is to the offense.

The Panthers will begin by allowing Newton to begin throwing for the first time since he received surgery this offseason. It's uncertain on what the timetable is for Newton to participate in team drills.

Nonetheless, Newton being able to throw is a step in the right direction towards him starting in the Panthers Week 1 game against the Los Angeles Rams. After all, they'll need him to be healthy if he's going to face someone like Aaron Donald.
