The Carolina Panthers are parting ways with defensive tackle Kawann Short after eight seasons with the team, per ESPN‘s Adam Schefter. The veteran is expected to garner significant interest from the teams who are looking to fill in a spot on their defensive line heading to next season.

Short has been a mainstay for the Panthers ever since he was selected with the 44th pick in the 2013 NFL Draft. Despite dropping in the second round, the Purdue alum proved that he can compete in the league as he eventually earned a selection to the 2013 PFWA All-Rookie Team.

In just his third season, Short already established himself as one of the premier defensive tackles in the league. He was a pivotal piece for a Panthers side that competed in Super Bowl 50 after quarterback Cam Newton's MVP season.

Short also had a stellar campaign of his own as he earned his first Pro Bowl appearance and a second-team All-Pro selection in the same season. He eventually landed the second Pro Bowl selection of his career three years later in 2018.

However, the Indiana native was stopped in his tracks after suffering a partially-torn rotator cuff which prematurely ended his campaign in the 2019 season. In the following year, he found himself having another injury-riddled season where he only recorded six total tackles in three appearances as a starter for the Panthers.

His campaign was cut short once again as he was forced to have a season-ending shoulder injury back in mid-October of 2020. He is currently tallying career totals of 268 total tackles, 32.5 sacks, and nine forced fumbles through eight seasons in the league.

Despite being cut by the Panthers, it is certain that Kawann Short can still be a serviceable asset once he gets to recover from the injuries that haunted him these past few seasons.
