Star wide receiver Dez Bryant has suddenly hit the free agent market for the first time in his career after the Dallas Cowboys elected to release him on Friday morning. This has opened the door to the possibility of several teams making strong pursuits for Bryant's services.
The 29-year-old has already voiced an interest to stay within the NFC East for the opportunity to face the Cowboys twice a year, but the list of potential landing spots could far extend outside the division. However, it doesn't look like the Carolina Panthers will be among the teams looking to acquire the former Pro Bowler, according to Joseph Person of The Charlotte Observer.
Article Continues BelowThe Cowboys play the Carolina Panthers in Charlotte next season and are in the midst of a wide receiver rebuild. But Carolina is not expected to pursue Bryant, according to two sources.
Carolina has a need to address to their wide receiver position, but that doesn't appear it will happen with Bryant being a possible addition. The team has just over $5 million in salary cap space, which likely won't be enough to lure in the ninth-year wideout to join the mix.
That said, the Panthers have made moves to add to their wide receiver core by trading for Torrey Smith last month along with signing Jarius Wright that will add to their group that includes Devin Funchess. The team will likely look toward the draft to bring in additional talent that will be both younger and cheaper options with one of their selections in the first couple of rounds.
The Panthers are coming off a promising season that saw them reach the playoffs for the fourth time in the last five years. The team has in place a steady core group that could make another significant push toward the postseason in 2018 despite playing in the daunting NFC South.
