The Carolina Panthers are releasing cornerback Captain Munnerlyn, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Primarily a nickel corner at this stage, Munnerlyn played in all 16 games this past season, finishing with 47 tackles, two sacks, an interception, a fumble recovery and nine passes defended.

The 30-year-old, who played his collegiate football at the University of South Carolina, was originally selected by the Panthers in the seventh round (216th pick overall) of the 2009 NFL Draft.

He appeared in 15 contests during his rookie campaign, registering 42 tackles, a forced fumble and a couple of fumble recoveries. The following year, Munnerlyn played in all 16 games, totaling 45 stops, three interceptions, a fumble recovery, 12 passes defended and a defensive touchdown.

The Mobile, Al. native proceeded to spend the first five years of his career with the Panthers, eventually becoming a full-time starter during his third season.

Munnerlyn then signed a three-year deal with the Minnesota Vikings in March 2014. He started all 16 contests during his first season with the club, accumulating 61 tackles, a couple of picks, a fumble recovery and five passes defended.

He was then demoted to a backup role the next year.

After three seasons with the Vikings, Munnerlyn returned to the Panthers on a four-year deal in March 2017. However, he made it just two years into his contract before Carolina decided to part ways with him.

The Panthers are coming off of a disappointing 2018 campaign in which they won just seven games.

They got off to a 6-2 start, but an injury to Cam Newton and other issues caused them to plummet in the second half of the year.
