The Carolina Panthers played three quarterbacks in 2019. Yet, their starting quarterback for 2020 may not be on their current roster.
That's why David Newton of ESPN.com feels that the Panthers will sign Teddy Bridgewater in free agency and then release or trade Cam Newton.
Newton started two games for Carolina this past season before succumbing to a foot injury that would knock him out for the remainder of the year. Kyle Allen took over in his stead and led the Panthers to four straight wins from the jump, but the Allen honeymoon did not last very long, as he began to struggle and was then replaced by Will Grier for the final two games of the season.
Grier, who was a rookie in 2019, did not look impressive in either of his two starts.
As a result, Carolina may very well be in the market for a quarterback, and while the Panthers have remained rather mum on Newton's status going forward, there does appear to be a chance that the club moves on from him this offseason.
Bridgewater spent the 2019 campaign with the New Orleans Saints, and thanks to a thumb injury that sidelined Drew Brees for five games, he saw plenty of action, throwing for 1,384 yards, nine touchdowns and a couple of interceptions while completing 67.9 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 99.1.
The Saints also went 5-0 in Bridgewater's starts.
Bridgewater has been in the NFL since 2014 and was the Minnesota Vikings' starting quarterback for his first two NFL seasons before a catastrophic knee injury derailed his career.
Since 2016, Bridgewater has started just six games.
