The offseason was quite a rollercoaster, or, should I say, carousel, for NFL quarterbacks. Trades were flying, players entered (and exited) retirement, and rookies entered the league. However, through it all, Baker Mayfield has yet to find his place of employment for the 2022-2023 season. Most recently, the Cleveland Browns quarterback has been the topic of discussion amongst trade rumors involving the Carolina Panthers. And, with the latest comments from Matt Rhule, that possibility still stands.
He told reporters that Sam Darnold has significantly improved from last year's OTAs. But, like any other position, his job isn't 100% secure.
Panthers reporter Joe Person tweeted Rhule's quotes Thursday afternoon.
Matt Rhule: Difference in Sam Darnold from OTAs last year to this year is "night and day." But Rhule said if there's someone they can bring in to make the team better — at any position — they're going to do it.

Rhule indirectly danced around the reality of the Mayfield trade rumors while discussing the Panthers' quarterback situation. He told reporters that, if the team played today, Sam Darnold would be their guy. However, he thinks that they should make a “significant” upgrade if it's available.
Matt Rhule on Sam Darnold: "If we played today, Sam would be our quarterback."

Of course Darnold would be their guy if the season started today. He's the only viable option on the Panthers' roster. Rhule's comments all but confirm that whispers surrounding Mayfield may be more than just rumors.
The head coach's remarks come just a day after the Robbie Anderson vs Mayfield saga. Anderson teased his retirement in a viral tweet after he aired his disinterest in Mayfield potentially joining the Panthers.
