The Carolina Panthers have been rather open about quarterback Cam Newton's health thus far this offseason. Regardless, it appears there are still some concerns about the lingering shoulder injury.

It is no secret that Newton struggled to find his touch last season. According to Mike Sando of The Athletic one coordinator feels that is what may have led to his low ranking:

“I don’t think he trusted his arm last season, and you could see it in the deep passing game,” a coordinator said.

He added that Newton would be bumped up if he were to remain healthy.

“When he is healthy and everything is going, I think he is a 1,” a personnel director said. “He changes how that team plays, but with the injury, he would be a 2 for me.”

There is no question Newton has fallen on some rough times as of late. Regardless, he is not too far removed from his MVP campaign in 2015. While he has been unable to get back to his elite form, there is still no doubt about his capabilities.

Despite his recent struggles, Newton is still viewed by many of his peers as the most underrated player in the league. That is because few players are more difficult to defend when they are on their game than Newton is thanks to his dynamic skill set.

Carolina had high hopes that the arrival of offensive coordinator Norv Turner would help Newton get back on track before he was plagued by the shoulder. Fortunately, they are much more optimistic about his health going into the 2019 NFL season.
