The Cincinnati Bengals were able to secure running back Joe Mixon for the long haul with a four-year, $48 million contract extension. He is optimistic that this is just the beginning for him and quarterback Joe Burrow.
The arrival of Burrow and Mixon's extension have helped officially usher in a new era for the Bengals' franchise. The latter has high hopes that the pair will be able to retire together , via Ben Baby of ESPN.com:
“I really don’t think he’s your typical rookie,” Mixon said. “He’s definitely going to be a great guy here in this league for years to come, and I hope I can finish my career here with him.”
Although it is still too early to think so far ahead, Mixon's comments are indicative of his desire to remain in Cincinnati. Aside from his recent payday, it appears the promise Burrow showed in training camp only helped solidify this notion.
Mixon has been one of the few bright spots for this lackluster Bengals' offense in recent years coming off of back-to-back 1,000-yard rushing campaigns. He also flashed his versatility as a pass-catcher with 78 receptions for 583 yards and four touchdowns.
Mixon's emergence as one of the most productive running backs in the league should help serve as a stabilizing factor for Burrow while he finds his footing under center to begin the 2020 NFL season. The pair are hoping to kick off this new era in style by sparking a potential resurgence on offense.
Given the uncertainty that comes with the running back position, only time will tell if Mixon gets his ideal ending.
