Before the Cincinnati Bengals took Joe Burrow with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, Boomer Esiason said he was a can't-miss quarterback. With Burrow lighting it up for the Bengals in his rookie season, Esiason is taking a victory lap for his call on Burrow.
“Remember what I told you?” Esiason is asking last week, via the team's official website. “A hundred percent. You know it immediately. There are certain guys you can tell immediately and he was one of those guys.
Coming out of LSU, Burrow was a highly-touted prospect after tossing 60 touchdowns in his final collegiate season. Due to his breakout performance in 2019 at LSU, the Bengals selected the confident signal-caller with the No. 1 overall pick.
Article Continues BelowIn his first eight starts, Burrow has looked remarkable, completing 67 percent of his passes for 2,272 yards and 11 touchdowns. While Burrow is looking to create his own path in the NFL, Esiason likened him to Andrew Luck.
“He's a pocket passer. He doesn't run as much as Andrew Luck, but his assimilation to the game, his mindset, his thought process, his ability to make plays reminds me a lot of Andrew Luck,” Esiason says. “Andrew Luck was considered a can't-miss player. John Elway was a can't-miss player. Peyton Manning was a can't-miss player. I think the jury was out on Kyler Murray when he was drafted just because of his size. But he's now obviously a can't-miss player.
Just a week ago, Joe Burrow and the Bengals upset the Tennessee Titans at home to give Cincinnati their second win of the season. If Burrow is able to continue performing well as he has thus far, the sky is the limit for the 23-year-old quarterback.
