The Cincinnati Bengals' Cinderella season came to a tragic close on Super Bowl Sunday. Despite holding a four-point lead to start the second half, the offense sputtered out and the defense couldn't hold on. The result was the Los Angeles Rams winning Super Bowl 56 on their home stadium.
After the game, Bengals kicker Evan McPherson had some interesting comments on the team's final drive that went awry. (via Paul Dehner Jr.)
Evan McPherson said he could have take a shot from 65 if they were on the last play of the game or a tough fourth down to make.

McPherson made a name for himself in the 2021 postseason, emerging as one of the standout stars on a young Bengals team despite being a kicker. He tied legendary kicker Adam Vinatieri's postseason record of 14 made field goals, while not missing any field goal attempt. McPherson's leg is one of the biggest reasons why Cincy made it back to the Super Bowl this season.
On the final play of Super Bowl 56, Cincinnati was down by 3 after a touchdown by eventual MVP Cooper Kupp. Facing a fourth-and-one situation, the team wasn't able to move the sticks, ending their season prematurely. With Evan McPherson's penchant for hitting clutch long kicks, it's possible that the game may have went to overtime if they were able to convert that fourth down.
Despite the loss, there's a lot to like about this young Bengals roster. If McPherson is able to sustain his performance as one of the best kickers in the league, Cincy's offense will gain a much-needed stability in clutch situations. They will now likely look to fix the biggest issue on their roster: their historically bad offensive line.
