Shortly after the start of the offseason, the Cleveland Browns became one of the most active teams in the league, acquiring several proven veterans to the mix. Among those additions was former Buffalo Bills quarterback Tyrod Taylor, putting him in line to be the starter for the Browns to begin the 2018 season.
According to Kevin Clark of The Ringer, general manager John Dorsey said Cleveland could consider offering Taylor an extension if his play on the field is superb.

There may come a point here where I call his representatives in October and say, ‘Let’s strike something up,’” Dorsey said about a potential extension for Taylor, who has just one year left on his deal. I asked whether it would be a disappointment if they have to look at Taylor long term, which would imply that Mayfield wasn’t pushing him as the starter. “Nah, let’s deal with it when it happens,” he said.
This may be jumping the gun a bit with the expectations for Taylor, but the possibility is certainly there for him to make a strong impression on the franchise this season. He is currently in line to be the starter to begin the year, giving him a chance to prove that his dual-threat ability as both a passer and runner could cement him as the leader of the offense.
Taylor is in the final year of his deal worth $16 million, making the 2018 season highly critical for him to prove, not only the Browns but also other NFL teams, that he can be an effective option as a starting quarterback. The onus is on him to prove that he has that ability to deserve a lucrative, long-term deal.
With rookie quarterback Baker Mayfield lurking to make a push to bethe starter this upcoming season, the pressure is on Taylor to take advantage of this unique opportunity to demonstrate that he can be the quarterback that finally leads the Browns back to the playoffs and sustained success.
