Add Indianapolis Colts defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus to the list of potential Cleveland Browns head coaching candidates for next season.

According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, the Browns have requested permission to interview Eberflus.

Eberflus took over as Indianapolis' defensive coordinator this season, leading the Colts to the 11th-ranked defense in the NFL.

The 48-year-old is a familiar face in Cleveland, as Eberflus served two years as the Browns' linebackers coach from 2009 through 2010. He then made his way to the Dallas Cowboys, where he was the linebackers coach from 2011 through 2015 before ultimately serving two positions in 2016 and 2017, keeping his post as linebackers coach while also serving as the team's passing game coordinator.

The Browns lost their season finale to the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday, ending their year with a record of 7-8-1. It marked Cleveland's best finish since 2007, when it won 10 games and narrowly missed the playoffs.

The Browns made a coaching change in the middle of the season this year, firing Hue Jackson and replacing him with Gregg Williams, who was the team's defensive coordinator at the time. Williams then proceeded to lead Cleveland to a 5-3 record, actually briefly vaulting the team into playoff contention after an impressive road win over the Denver Broncos in Week 15.

However, in spite of Williams' success, he does not appear to truly be in the running for the full-time head-coaching position, although the Browns will interview him on Tuesday.

Cleveland has not made the playoffs since the 2002-03 campaign, the longest active drought in the NFL.
