Cleveland Browns head coach Hue Jackson says he will find a way to incorporate Baker Mayfield into the offense. Mayfield was selected No. 1 overall in the 2018 NFL Draft and is expected to be the future of the Browns organization.
However, Tyrod Taylor has been named the primary play-caller as the team heads into Week 1. Jackson wants to make sure Mayfield gets on the field and gains valuable experience while he develops. After naming Taylor the starter, Jackson had an important message for Mayfield on the final episode of HBO's Hard Knocks, via Charean Williams of NBC Sports.
“I’m going to keep creating situations for you to even do more. You keep doing your part every day. This is going to be your life for a long time, so I hope you understand the opportunity that’s in front of you right now. But you’ve earned it. I’m not just giving it to you. You’ve earned it,” said Jackson.

The nature of these situations still needs to be determined. Baker is a quarterback who loves to go for the home run plays by attacking defenses down the field. He could be used as a situational quarterback in long yardage situations. The Oklahoma product has a talent for looking off coverage and throwing the long ball. Both Taylor and Mayfield can extend plays by running the ball or avoiding rushers to extend plays and find open receivers. It's possible that Mayfield could be seen in a wildcat formation in short yardage situations as well.
If the season progresses and the Browns aren't successful, we might see more of Mayfield than expected this year. Getting reps will be a critical factor in determining how long it will be before he assumes starting quarterback responsibilities.
