Ever since the New England Patriots shocked the NFL with the release of Cam Newton, the rumors have been ramping up on the quarterback's next possible destination. Newton has been linked with several teams, including the Dallas Cowboys.

With Dak Prescott just coming off of the notable ankle injury coupled with the uncertainty surrounding their quarterback depth, the Cowboys have been listed as a viable landing spot for the former NFL MVP winner.

However, Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy is currently not interested in bringing in the veteran quarterback, which he further spoke about on Thursday.

“To sit here and talk about any of the players not on our roster, I don’t think there’s really anything that’s beneficial that comes out of that for us,” McCarthy said. “But Cam, I’ve had a chance to compete against Cam, chance to watch some of his tape in New England.

“I still think he has a ton of football left. But we’re very excited about the group that we have.”

After deciding to keep Cooper Rush as the team's backup quarterback, the Cowboys elected to claim former Carolina Panthers passer Will Grier off waivers, although there was speculation that they would look to Newton instead. McCarthy noted that there was a key reason for hauling him into the team.

“Going through the quarterback position, Will [Grier], we thought was the best prospect out there,” McCarthy said.

“Had a chance to study him when he was at Carolina two years ago and felt like through the personnel department and coaching staff, we had really good information on him and thought he’d be a great fit for us.”

In the meantime, Newton's wait for a new team ahead of the season continues.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport did note on Thursday that it is “unlikely” Newton will sign anywhere before Week 1.

Newton did have several promising moments in preseason while with the Patriots, but it has far not been enough to push a team to sign him.
