The Philadelphia Eagles handed Carson Wentz a long-term extension earlier this week—making him one of the highest-paid quarterbacks in the NFL. His deal may make it tougher for the Dallas Cowboys and Dak Prescott to come to terms.
As Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk points out, the contract that Wentz received could complicate Prescott's new deal. After Wentz was given his extension, fans immediately brought up Jared Goff's and Prescott's future deals.
Of course, all three guys were taken in the 2016 NFL Draft. Goff was taken with the number one overall pick, Wentz was second, but Prescott was taken in the fourth round.
Therefore, unlike Goff and Wentz, Prescott's rookie contract expires after the 2019 season. This is due to Wentz and Goff having the fifth-year option for being taken in the first round.
The Cowboys have been trying to work out a deal with their franchise quarterback to no avail. In addition, Dallas could decide to place their franchise tag on Prescott if they are unable to agree on a long-term deal after this season.
Prescott has helped the Cowboys make the playoffs twice in his three seasons in the NFL. In 2018, he got his first playoff win against the Seattle Seahawks. He would then come up short against Goff and the Los Angeles Rams the following week.
Wentz's extension is worth $128 million over four years so Prescott figures to command similar money on his new deal. Although, the Cowboys have reportedly been trying to get Prescott to sign a more “team-friendly” deal.
It's tough telling a quarterback to take less money for the better of the team. Especially, considering the fact that the quarterback market continues to rise. Nonetheless, the extension that Wentz received may cause difficulties for the Cowboys and Prescott.
