Not a lot of fans outside those who breathe and live Dallas Cowboys football know who Cooper Rush is. The team's perennial backup quarterback behind Dak Prescott is about to play his final football game of the preseason.

The Cowboys are set to match up against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for their final preseason tilt, and every snap he and the rest of the backups will get are important.

Michael Gehlken of The Dallas Morning News revealed how important these preseason games are for depth chart players like Rush:

“They're huge,” Rush said this week. “They're our season. I'm not supposed to play in the regular season, so I've got to get my reps here, just try to take advantage of them.”

His lack of game time doesn't mean that he's not good enough, though. His numbers in college have been nothing short of impressive: his passing yards never went below 3,000 after his freshman campaign in 2013. He also impressed during the 2017 preseason with his 38-of-51 passing clip for 398 yards, six touchdowns, zero interceptions and a 135.9 rating.

The coaching staff also understands how important these games are for Rush and are giving him all of the snaps he needs to become more comfortable in the pocket and be ready to play if Prescott can't make it for some reason.

“The big thing for those guys is just getting snaps in games,” head coach Jason Garrett said. “There just aren't that many snaps for quarterbacks in games, so you've got to take advantage of them. You've got to learn from them. He's done a good job of doing that.”

Cowboys fans hope that they don't have to see Rush play in an important game. However, they will be happy to know that their backup is a capable one as well.
