The Dallas Cowboys once believed they would have a deal down with quarterback Dak Prescott before the start of the 2019 season. Then, the season started. Talks, at least publicly, halted. It appears as if contract negotiations have gotten to a point where Prescott won't be playing on a new, massive contract.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Prescott is primed to receive the franchise tag after the 2019 season. Per the NFL insider's sources, “nothing is going on” between the two sides, ” it's hard to imagine a new deal getting done,” as he said. However, there never was a deadline set to make the deal. It is still within the realm of possibility.

Prescott's play in 2019 depicts a player worth a high-price, which, as reports allude to, he is requesting. He currently has the Cowboys leading the NFC East at 5-3, recording a 102.5 passer rating in the process. On the season, the fourth-year quarterback has thrown for 2,380 yards, 15 touchdowns and eight interceptions on a 69.6% completion rate.

Since taking over as the starter in 2016, Prescott has led the Cowboys to a 37-19 record, including two playoff appearances with the team going further than the wildcard round. For his career, the Mississippi State product has thrown for 13,256 yards, 82 touchdowns and 33 interceptions on a 66.6% completion rate. He has tallied 1,119 yards and 21 touchdowns on the ground.

Unlike star quarterbacks Jared Goff and Carson Wentz from his same draft class, Prescott is on a four-year contract.

If the Cowboys do not reach a long-term deal or franchise tag him, he will be a free agent after season's end.
