The Dallas Cowboys are in need of more help at wide receiver after their release of Dez Bryant. They will likely look to the upcoming draft to help address that need. However, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has acknowledged that the team doesn’t expect whichever rookie receiver they pick won’t completely make up for Bryant’s loss.
“I think we recognize that we’ve got a hole to fill with Dez. We actually, in general, know right now and have known that we probably won’t have what we call a pure X receiver to take the place of Dez,” Jones said per Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk.
“We know we won’t have that because even if we draft one that is an X receiver he’s not going to be, as a rookie, he’s not going to come in here and give us that type of performance. You’ve got to assume that.”
Although Bryant once again didn’t live up to his high standards last year, he still finished as the team’s top receiver. He caught 69 passes for 838 yards and six touchdowns, which were all the most on the team.
It would be a tough ask to expect that type of production out of any rookie wideout, especially since he’ll also have to deal with the added pressure of effectively replacing Bryant on the roster.
In the absence of a bona fide No. 1-caliber receiver, the Cowboys will have to try and replace Bryant by committee. Their potential rookie pick will join Allen Hurns, Terrance Williams, Cole Beasley, and Deonte Thompson on a Dallas receiving corps that will need contributions from everyone in 2018 to compensate for Bryant's loss.
