Over the last several days, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has made various comments that appear to be directed at former Pro Bowl wide receiver Dez Bryant.
The latest has Jones stating that the Cowboys haven't had a true No.1 wide receiver in quite some time. It didn't take long for Bryant to respond via social media, but he decided to take these statements from Jones in a positive manner by stating that he never played in an offensive scheme in Dallas that made him the clear-cut top receiving option. I made things happen throughout my career. I’m Mr. 73.
“They had [Jason] Witten as our No. 1, so Jerry is right.”
Bryant looks to be past the point of bickering back and forth with Jones, as he doesn't appear to want to continue due to his respect for him. At the same time, Bryant did receive a significant workload in the passing game during his heyday with the team that saw him put together a highly productive three-year stretch. He earned the acclaim as one of the league's best wide receivers, while the 73 he is referencing is the all-time Cowboys receiving touchdown mark he holds.
From 2012 to 2014 Bryant hauled in at least 88 catches for 1,200 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns while seeing more than 130 targets thrown his way in each campaign. Former Pro Bowl tight end Jason Witten may have been heavily featured in the offense and was often times Tony Romo's security blanket in the offense, but Bryant was their best big-play receiving option. Bryant's production did fall off in the last three years with the franchise, failing to reach 1,000 receiving yards in any of those seasons. The 29-year-old's numbers speak for themselves and showcase how vital he was to the team's offensive success.
