The Jason Garrett-led Dallas Cowboys offense has been nothing short of abysmal thus far in the 2018 NFL season. Despite their struggles, running back Ezekiel Elliott has still managed to put up some solid numbers on the ground.

As a result, there is speculation that he could be urging the coaching staff for more carries. However, according to ESPN's Todd Archer, Elliott understands that the game plan will dictate his touches:

“I mean you can do all of that but at the end of the day if you go back and watch the film, it's poor execution on offense,” Elliott said. “You can't run the ball if you're down by 17 points. That's what it is. We get behind, we've got to be able to throw the ball and not be able to do what we want to do.

It is encouraging to see that Elliott is understanding of the whole situation. There is no question Dallas would love to get their workhorse some more touches out of the backfield. Unfortunately, their affinity for falling behind early often forces them to abandon the run.

It is still something that the Cowboys should seriously consider regardless of how the game is going. They currently rank near the bottom of the league in both total offense and scoring offense. Yet, Elliott has still managed to tie the league lead in rushing yards (274) despite still having yet to eclipse 20 carries in a game. That kind of efficiency should certainly warrant the star back some more carries moving forward.
